So, who's Hurting Sam or Jared Lately?

For the SPN preseries fic fans, this month ayane42 has discovered Ways We Stay Alive by yet_intrepid. "Gotta be just like the real thing, son," Dad says, tightening the rope against Sam's bare skin. "So you won’t panic when it happens someday." Sam's tied up in a shed in the woods. Dean's stuck back at home with a pile of research to get through before he can take out the monster and get Sam back. And Dad? Well, Dad's the monster. That's just how training goes. ayane42 calls this "an intense story of John's "training" of his boys. And he is a monster, no doubt about that." The story link is to AO3, so it can be downloaded in * eReader * formats too.

Somewhere Down the Road "is a fresh, hot off the press s10 fic!" cherry916 raves, and adds that in this 4K SPN gen fic the author, KKBELVIS, "explores demon!Dean and his responses to an injured Sam. It's angsty, dark, and just the right touch of hurt to satisfy our cravings."

reggie11 has found a season 9 episode missing scene to indulge in: Blood by scullspeare. Summary: Tag to Alex, Annie, Alexis, Anne. After Sam was drained of most of his blood, he made it down those basement stairs only by leaning heavily on Dean and… then they cut to commercial. Sigh. This takes place during that missing chunk of time, and offers some Sam POV on the MoC-fueled changes in Dean. reggie11 calls this "a really important and well written tag. As usual the show just skipped over the fact that Sam had lost enough blood to almost kill him. I also liked how she had both POVs covered with this. There are so many people who are very black and white about the whole Gadreel thing and they are either 100% on Sam's side or 100% on Dean's. It's not that clear cut and she inserted that so well without hammering us over the head with it. Plus, I always love Jody and she's a great voice of reason here too."

reggie11 also likes the new Detached by MoonyJ4M. Summary: Following the events of Road Trip, Sam and Cas head to the bunker. Sam doesn't feel quite like himself after being used as a vessel and has some trouble to be at peace again with the idea that Cas is still wearing Jimmy Novak's body. This 8K fic offers "a deeper look into the aftermath of of Gadreel's possession of Sam that was never really addressed on the show. It's quite raw and painful, and absolutely beautifully written," our reccer says. And "although it's tagged as Sastiel, it felt more like comfort, support, and friendship. There is nothing explicit and I think it would be fine to read for people that don't ship this pairing." It's an AO3 fic, so it's available to download in * eReader * formats.

spn_summergen is wrapping up now. Have you been reading all along, or are you waiting for the reveals and plan to check out your favorite writers then? harrigan has just read a short (under 3K) anonymous story there that's worth a look! "I wasn't sure how I'd feel about an End!verse fic with both brothers in it," she says, "but the author did a great job focusing away from anger and guilt and finger-pointing and letting us savor the slow simmer of reconciliation instead. Sam's POV felt very real to me, and story's pacing was just right. Blood Brothers was a poignant look at what might have been... with both hurt!Sam and hurt!Dean too!"

Featured Fic Recs:

For a completed 31-chapter SPN gen epic, ayane42 takes us back to season 2, after the episode Hunted, with Vampire Hunting by fantasdancer. Summary: The Vampires discover Sam's secret. Soon Dean and Sam are being hunted by the Vampires who want to use Sam in a mysterious ceremony. ayane42 enjoyed the concussion, blood loss, fever, headache, psychic powers, non-con, and kidnapping that poor Sam is put through, and says this is "a really exciting story of Sam and Dean against an elder vampire, with lots of hurt Sam. Really a great story!!"

On the other hand, if you're looking for an epic-length J2AU, with heartbreak, attempted non-con, exhaustion, dehydration, and mpreg, ayane42 recommends Mending a Broken Heart by alienat. Summary: Jared Padalecki-Lafferty is devastated after the death of his husband. To start over and move on he packs up his three kids and moves back to Texas, where he meets kind and gorgeous Jensen Ackles. Jensen is completely smitten by the stranger, but Jared is still very much in love with his husband. Can Jensen help Jared and the kids to overcome the grief and find happiness again? "This was one of the first stories I read," ayane42 shares, "and it is a wonderful story, filled with heartbroken Jared, struggling after losing his husband. Just a wonderfully written story of learning to love again. Filled with grief and angst, it's just really great!" AND it's available to download in * eReader * formats here!

music videos: secretlytodream (aka Loki) FTW again! This time (with spoilers for episode 10.1) it's Burning Sorrows: and the smoke from your cigarette // burns the light from your eyes // i will try to remember you // through the eyes of a child. "Once again Loki delivers a powerful and emotional look at the brothers' lives," ash48 says. "This really captures the pain Sam is feeling as he watches his brother die and then discovers he's a demon. It'll intensify that ache in your heart when thinking about how much Sam and Dean have suffered."

podfic: Sam's in pain, and so is his brother. Pain is very complicated. That's the summary to roque_clasique's 'clasique' fic: Northern Birds. We've rec'd this season 7 gem before (just check out the 3 pages of comments for all the reasons why), but *now* you can listen to it as a podfic! glovered does a beautiful job, clean and clear with just the right pacing, and subtle changes in her voice for Sam dialogue vs. Dean. Just under 40 minutes of fantastic, here!
