madebyme_x! "Way back in 2006," she admits, "I discovered a whole new world in fanfiction and fandom, and it was all thanks to Supernatural. In those early days I was a shy lurker, reviewing anonymously, and it wasn't until 2009 that I posted my very first fic. Now I'm addicted! I'm a h/c junkie and hurt!Sam is my favourite flavour. I've often wondered where my love of hurt!Sam (and hurt!Jared) stems from, and I think I just enjoy seeing how a little hurt can highlight so many different aspects of Sam's character, especially how far he can push himself emotionally and physically for his family."

Who's Hurting Sam or Jared Lately?

Some of us watched Olympics during the February hiatus... and some indulged in Olympic J2AU! tsuki_no_bara shared the 3K-ish NC17 Gold Medal Dreams, in which Jared is favored for the gold in men's downhill, until he crashes and wrecks his chance. Jensen tries to make him feel better about it. harrigan says if you're in the mood for more focus on the comfort than hurt, this comment!fic wins a medal!

cherry916 has a WIP to rec: Punzel by compo67. Summary: Jensen is a ride operator at the Storybook Land Canal in Disneyland. His day changes unexpectedly and he ends up outside Goofy's House with a lost little girl and a pregnant coworker. If you're a fan of mpreg, you'll like this. Cherry says, "I just recently discovered this, thanks to tumblr, and I didn't realize how easily I'd be sucked into this wild rollercoaster of a story. It's already past 40 chapters and she's still going strong. The characters are amazing, and Jared and Jensen's relationship in particular is what really makes this story."

jessm78 found a new SPN gen fic with hurt!Sam: Underneath a Stretching Skyline verse #04 : The Water Keeps its Course by lauehime. Summary: Sam’s calling for the bottle and the bottle is calling for him. But he clearly doesn’t have a problem. Jess says, "This is set in season 7 during Sam's hallucifer troubles. He tries to cope with one problem by starting another. The author portrays his turmoil so well, and really makes you sympathize for him so much. The concerned (but feeling helpless) Dean is great too, and there's a nice scene between the two of them near the very end that really made me smile."

madebyme_x is reccing a recent 12K J2AU for us: Love in Technicolor by golden_cyborg. Summary: Jared is a cyborg designed to kill. He may look human, he may have a human brain, but he's a machine. Jensen has been killing for his handler far longer than Jared, but he doesn't seem to agree. The type of hurt is identity issues, and madebyme_x calls it "a gripping story full of mystery and intrigue and expertly crafted world-building. We see Jared's journey from being a mechanical and clinical machine, to something more 'human' as he grows closer to Jensen."

Featured Fic Recs:

You know what's fun? A fic where the injury happens right off the bat, and we get to wallow in the recovery period for pages and pages. harrigan's pick this month is the 2011 Aiming to Shoot You Down by mistyzeo. Summary: Officer Jared Padalecki is shot on a routine drug bust gone wrong, and he winds up in the hospital under the care of nurse Jensen Ackles. After he's released Jared never expects to see the nurse again, but he runs into him by chance at a local coffee shop, coming off his night shift. Their budding romance is an unusual one, checked by Jared's long-term recovery and Jensen's unconventional work schedule, and sometimes it's not easy to find time for one another. Somehow though, through thick and thin, they're determined to make it work. Word count over 30K to wallow in, and this author always delivers the goods! Bonus artwork, soundtrack, and timestamps!
ayane42 has culled a classic from 2006 for your reading pleasure: Hamartia by rei-c. Summary: The Game is a Stanford tradition, but Sam’s first Hallowe’en away from his family won’t just be puzzles and innocent sleeplessness. Is he hunting for clues, or is something hunting him? The type of hurt here is loneliness and nightmares. It's Sam/Jess het, @ 13K, and ayane42 says that "this story is part of a 'verse, but this one really resonated with me. Sam's first adventure at Stanford, Sam's internal struggle between being normal vs. his life as a hunter..."
Another rec from ayane42 is SPN gen this time: The Cancer Inside by purplehairedwonder. Summary: Comment fic: Still angry at Sam for his betrayal and starting the Apocalypse, Dean harbors some less than pleasant wishes toward his brother, and a run-in with a djinn gives him exactly what he wants... It's about 6K, with beating, bruises, handcuffs, and self-abasement, and ayane42 loves this story "for the pure Season 5 Sam whumpage. Sam's guilt, Dean's anger amplified by the djinn... ♥"
The first of our guest reccer's gems this month is the 2K SPN gen story Prayer Bundles by quickreaver. Summary (from a prompt): Basically, I want Sam and Dean settled, damaged but living a life, and I want Sam to suffer a completely normal loss: the (ordinary, not supernatural, non-violent) death of a loved pet. And it affects Sam a lot more than you might expect, maybe because there have been so many other losses that he never really had time to process. Dean is awesome and comforting in his own prickly, Dean way; some of the isolation from each other they've undergone in earlier, larger losses gets healed. Our reccer says, "This fic was beautiful and touching - it left me with a tear in my eye. The writer captured Sam's experience perfectly, balancing grief and emotion so well, especially with the Lucifer complication. There's also some awesome big!bro Dean here too."
For a more epic-length hurt!Sam, madebyme_x points us to The Hunt by ames-449. Summary: John's helping a friend on a hunt. Leaving a 12 year old Sam behind, he thinks he will be safe, but Sam finds himself in serious danger. Meanwhile, John and Dean have their own problems. Can they save themselves, and Sam, before its too late? madebyme_x describes this fic as "full of action, awesome OC's, a creepy motw, tension and drama. We see Sam struggling to deal with the harsh realities of the 'family business'."

art: ayane42 is amazed by boyking Sam by nickigrants, calling it "an eye-catching and powerful piece of art that really communicates the darkness of the boy king."

art: Does that just whet the appetite for more? How about Monsters by the-velvet-goldmine. ayane42 says "Sam as the boy king? Hooked me right there! I've read tons of stories of Sam becoming the boy king or being possessed by Lucifer, but now I find art showing what Sam could turn into, a monster!"

art: Prefer your Sam more human? Sam Winchester by yesi-v224 is "a great piece that really captures that scene from 5x01 when Bobby is telling Sam to lose his number," ayane42 says. "Sam is already kicking himself and now Bobby is doing it too."

art: Paint the Town Red is an art and GIF animation by quickreaver and monicawoe. madebyme_x says, "I can't stop staring at this! There's just so much detail and the art and animation combo is just stunning."

music videos: Don't miss Feel me by superkitte. ash48 reports that "This is a very well constructed AU crossover vid. It features Sam being hunted, captured, tortured and turned into a monster. You don't need to be familiar with The Convent to understand this story. It also features awesome big brother Dean. A must watch for hurt!Sam fans."

music videos: Has everyone seen the brilliant Radioactive by counteragent? Summary: I'm waking up to ash and dust. Sam remembers every time his body wasn’t his. harrigan says this is visually stunning, flawlessly executed, and emotionally powerful. As counteragent says, I don't think there is a song long enough for Sam's possession trauma... but she delivers an amazing and heart-wrenching vid to explore it. (ETA: that's the LJ link. podfic: de_nugis's The Old Man of Peru is a fun little SPN Sam/Dean(ish) 3K fic (gen-safe) that's now available as a downloadable 20 minute podfic here. The story is read by fantamae, whose dialogue voice is wonderfully distinct from her narrator voice, which is just as vibrant and colorful as the author's writing style. Sam gets bitten by a bat. He probably doesn't get rabies. He probably isn't a werebat, either. ;D

eBooks, etc.: Silk and Steel by fatebegins is rec'd by ayane42 this month. Summary: As a child, Jared was gravely injured defending a young member of his pack against a poacher. Now, he walks with a severe limp in human form, and cannot run and hunt with the other wolves in his pack. He long ago accepted that he would never mate or have a family of his own. When the pack's alpha dies without an heir, distant alpha relatives come in from out of town to compete for the title of pack alpha. One of them is Jensen Ackles. When he sees sweet, dimpled Jared, he falls hard, but Jared knows his place well. He gently brushes off all of Jensen's attempts to woo him, reminding Jensen that he owes the pack a strong, healthy mate, not a gimpy omega. Jensen makes it his mission to convince Jared that he's the perfect mate for the pack alpha, and that he's worthy of everything. our reccer says "I stumbled upon this story and my heart literally leapt in my chest! Fatebegins hasn't written a J2 fic in such a long time!! She is one of my favorite authors and this new story is just as wonderful and heart breaking as any of her earlier works. Shy Jared being woo'ed by Jensen. Jared running away and Jensen not being deterred!! A really great read by a really great author!"
