Who's Hurting Sam or Jared Lately?

• Unless Its Roots Reach Down to Hell is a double win for hurt!Sam fans, with a 2K gen fic by monicawoe and body horror graphically depicted in art by quickreaver. Summary: Sam spent months piecing the spell together—he'd crafted it himself out of slivers of handwritten, ancient journals—the ones even the Men of Letters kept hidden away in a man-sized curse-box on lockdown in room 26. "Sam is a little dark, utterly ruthless, and willing to go to any lengths to save Dean from the Mark of Cain," reggie11 says. "He uses himself for a ritual with quite terrifying results to his body. It's nice to see Sam's duality in this; his love and goodness coupled with his darker side."
  
• Another new SPN gen treat rec'd by reggie11 is This Whipping Boy Done Wrong by elwarre, written for this prompt at the current ohsam challenge: For whatever reason, Sam has to cut or shave off all his hair. for reasons nobody around him really understands, it's extremely hard for him. Cue Dean-Cas-whoever trying to understand/comfort him. Just under 1K, this is slightly AU from episode 3 of season 10. Reggie says, "Even though this entirely told from Dean's POV, it is a breathtaking look at Sam's suffering throughout his entire life in a short one-shot. It made me want to cry."

Featured Fic Recs:

• Two of our mods raced each other to see who could rec Settling Into Now by jeyhawk first, and ayane42 won. She says, "This is a really heart-wrenching story that I have read several times. The author calls it the Emo!Jared 'verse because Jared has been through so much and is trying to get on with his life. What happened to him is hinted through the chapters, but the big reveal is at the end. Jensen and all the crazy people he meets at college are wonderful. This is a really awesome story and worth the read!" You're getting 20K+ of depression, suicide attempt, anxiety, phobia, breakdown, grief, and PTSD with this story, summarized as Going to college in a new town, far away from home, Jared finds friends and maybe more, but he also realizes that you can't hide your past forever.


• For a gen rec, ayane42 singles out In the Old House on the Corner by ErinisMagic. Summary: In the old house on the corner, there lived a man... "This story is told from an outsider's point of view of Sam, without Dean," ayane42 tells us. "It's a sad story that ends in death, but I really liked it because despite Sam's depression he still helped the people around him." This fic is around 10K and is on AO3, so it's *downloadable* to your favorite eReader!


• Another *downloadable* fic on AO3, this one SPN gen over 40K, is What To Do by Mandancie. Summary: John decided that Sam can stay in one school for the entire year. Everything should be fine and peaceful. But when is anything peaceful when the Winchesters are involved. Teenchesters! Sam/16; Dean/20. "This was a really tense story for me," ayane42 admits. "Sam finally gets to spend a whole year at a school and it turns into a nightmare! Very intense and heart breaking! Lots of hurt Sam where he won't tell Dean or his Dad what's happening."


• Who knew there was fanfic on deviantart? Case in point: Reversal of Fate by nightmares06. Summary: While investigating a rash of disappearances, Sam and Dean are hit by a blinding light and knocked unconscious. When Dean awakes he is confronted with the sight of three tiny figures. One of them his now three-inch-tall little brother with no memory of who he is and an abject terror of humans. Dean quickly scoops up Sam and one of the other tiny people as they are trying to flee, in a bid to keep Sam safe and to get some answers. But what will Dean do when Sam manages to escape? reggie11 loves that "with Sam being shrunk to the size of a human finger, he in constant danger. Throw in memory loss, debilitating pain, lots of angst from both Sam and Dean, a mystery, some great OCs, and trying to solve the case; it's a good mix of hurt/comfort and adventure." She adds that "the first half of the story is mainly Dean trying to find a way to protect and save Sam so there's lots of Dean POV. The story is on Deviant art but it's a nice reading format with links to each chapter."


• cherry916 has a special fondness for You Make My heart Melt by moviegeek03. After all, it was written for her birthday! Summary: Bobby is forced to enlist John's help after a hunt gone wrong. Little did he know how much that simple call would change his life. Another hunt draws John away, forcing him to leave the boys with Bobby who knows nothing about kids (Sam=18 months; Dean=5). It's about 4K of SPN gen, and "features wee!chesters with gruff Bobby having to take care of Sam and Dean. However, Dean knows just how to take care of Sam and Bobby just seems a bit lost."

• art: It's Always darkest Before the Dawn by jasric is a "stunning painting of Sam in the mental hospital, Sam as Lucifer, and possessed Sam," reggie11 reports. "And it's so pretty!!"


• art: chomaisky "always creates stunning art and these pieces are no exception," says ash48. They are for annie46's Sam/Dean story Once We Were Brothers. "Sam is badly beaten and bruised in one of the pieces (there are 3 here) and it looks heartbreaking. I haven't had a chance to read the story yet, but this art is making me keen to start it as soon as I can".


• music videos: justcallmemichelle's I've Come Undone is "a gorgeous vid exploring all of Sam's emotional hurts," ash48 is delighted to tell us. "It examines how he feels about himself and how much he as lost. It even made me see the Amelia story line in a different light. Bring tissues!"
